I like him, ever since "Butterflies", but I never warmed up to "Piglet" when it was shown on my local public tv station. I liked him in
that series when he time-traveled back to the time of WW II. Never saw "Only Fools and Horses."

Never really liked the time travelling show - Goodnight Sweetheart???
Have you tried 'Outside Edge'? the cast is amazing Josie Lawrence Brenda Blethyn Timothy Spall but I do think that Robert Daws steals the show - you don't have to know anything about cricket to enjoy the show, it's about relationships/friendships with a little cricket thrown in. Also 'Fat Friends' which is about a slimming club, trust me though not all of the friends are fat - this also stars Josie Lawrence, also Alison Steadman and If you watched 'Gavin and Stacey' last year (Alison Steadman played Gavin's Mom) Ruth Jones who co wrote that show is a member of the cast. Janet Dibley steals the show. Which brings us full circle since she starred with Nicholas Lyndhurst in 'The Two of Us' in the 80's |

Gosh, I knew I forgot a couple from my original list!
Black Books with the outstanding Dylan Moran (yes, yes, Bill Bailey is also quite good). As a bookstore owner, I found this series particularly hilarious. While I've not yet started drinking in the afternoon at my establishment, I do feel a great kinship to the main character in the episode where he's attempting to sort his taxes. A friend of my husband's has also just introduced us to The IT Crowd, which is fun if you or anyone you love works in IT (and, really, even if not!) |

If I'm not mistaken, Alison Steadman played Mrs Bennet in the Pride and Prejudice of 10 years ago.
Which brings me back to Colin Firth... "The Two of Us" sounds familiar, what was the premise? |

It was about a slightly mis-matched couple who co-habited and the challenges of living together while coping with the pressure they received from both sets of
parents to marry.
Janet Dibley is good as a comedic actress but recently has been cast a more shrewish character - both in 'Fat Friends' and 'The Chase' - a series about a veterinary practice set near where I was born and an area I know well so I watched it for the scenery. She does shrewish so well that you really, really want to slap her! I watch 'Last of the Summer Wine' on PBS occasionally for the scenery - a tiny tidbit of useless information, 'Last of the summer Wine' holds the record of being the longest-running comedy series in the world. Alison Steadman did play the mama in P&P - I wanted to slap her too |

I just got a notice of an advance screening in NYC of a series called 'Wallander' starring Kenneth Branagh. Series is based on Swedish novels, about
a "tortured sleuth." Apparently it will be on PBS soon.

Nobody watches Dancing with the Stars? Thank the Beeb for that. My mum keeps telling me that the UK version is much better than the US version.
Wouldn't mind seeing Colin Firth on that! I'm glad I'm not the only person who wanted to slap mama in P&P. |

elainesl - that Kenneth Branagh series is on our local PBS' Masterpiece Mystery! line-up for summer. I can't wait (along with season 2 of Inspector
Lewis).

I'm not a mystery or "Mystery!" fan generally speaking, but I will watch Kenneth Branagh in anything. I think he's a brilliant actor (and
director).

Wallander is not bad. Reflects closely the angst of the writing. Quite traumatic, but.

I'm glad my favorite Torchwood is on someone's list. Ba da da da da dum.... I love that show. I'm going to be DVRing Any Dream Will Do - it's
got Graham Norton and the guy from Torchwood. Woo hoo. Just heard that AbFab is being remade here in the US. No way that will work.

I agree about AbFab. Can't imagine a different cast. Of course, you can never tell. Couples was an absolute disaster as an American redo, but The Office
worked.
LOVE Graham Norton's show. There's always something that gives me a good laugh. What's Any Dream Will Do? |

Our local PBS station started showing MI-5 (called Spooks in UK) last night. It aired the first 2 epsiodes (series 1, from 2002) and I can
tell you that we're semi-hooked already. Funny thing is that after 2 mintues of it being on, my husband looked at me and said, "Should we turn on the
close caption?" The answer was YES!

Now that someone's mentioned the closed captioning, that reminded me that I now regularly use the c-c when I rent DVDs of Doctor Who and Torchwood. I
don't need it for most of the stuff, but every so often there's a word or phrase I just don't catch. I got tired of going back to hear again what
was said, and I've since I found it easier just to turn on the c-c from the beginning. I really only notice it when I need it, which is less often than it
used to be.

There were times I wished I had them for The Wire (not a British show!).

I do notice sound differences in British productions when shown on tv. I often have to raise the volume up to try to hear it (let alone understand it! ),
while on American programs I'm sometimes lowering the volume.

We've been trying to watch One Foot in the Grave, but it's funny, but a little too depressing since my husband retired not too long ago.
Now I'm going to look further up in this thread for the one about the two fat cooks- I'm sure it was mentioned earlier. |

About subtitles - a few weeks ago we were watching the reruns of Foyle's War on PBS. We've watched thes 2 episodes on DVD and on TV last year already.
Well, we turned on the subtitles this time, and boy, we probably missed 30% of the conversation!
Last Sunday was the first new Poirot on Masterpiece Mystery. Subtitles helped a lot there too, given how many different characters there are in Agatha Christie's mysteries - hard to keep track of everyone's name by just hearing them; easier when we have a visual. |

We enjoyed the Poirot also, and will watch the next one tonight. I did check out Foyle's War, which I liked, but it doesn't seem to be running right
now.
OTOH, I just want to say again what a hoot How Not To Decorate is. We have become devoted fans, although Colin and Justin are surely the biggest drama queens ever seen on the small screen. |
