I might have the possibility of going to Australia for 2-3 weeks in August and I was wondering what the weather would be like? Sydney and Cairns would be my
top 2 destinations.
Thanks! Dino

Lucky you! You will love Australia and the Australians.
According to this site August is near the end of their winter. www.cultureandrecreation.gov.au/articles/weather/ The average high for August in Sydney is 64 and the average low is 45. In Cairns the averages are 79/63. It's a big country so the ranges are quite wide. I was in Sydney in June which was the beginning of their winter, but it was very pleasant indeed. Not precisely swimming weather, but good touring weather. I was in the north of NSW and it was quite warm. And then I went to Canberra and it was very cold -- in the "Snowies" [one of their famous mountain ranges there was snow on the ground.] Here are some pictures of my trip: travelswithus.net/travel/australia.htm |

Great pictures!
Has anybody heard of Go Ahead Tours? I would usually never consider going on an escorted tour but they have a 26 nights OZ/NZ/Fiji tour with every meal, transfers, sights entrance, etc. included and the price looks quite reasonable. And it would make things much easier for me, I wouldn't have to plan how and when to travel all over the country. |

Sorry, I can't help with the tour company. But I was in Sydney in September, and the weather was just changing to spring. You'll probably want a jacket and/or sweater, especially in the evening. I think Cairns is always pretty mild, much like Los Angeles.

hmm I just looked on Wikipedia and it seems the weather shouldn't be too bad in Cairnes and Gold Coast but it might be a little bit chilly in Sydney and Melbourne.
I'd be interested in visiting Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo, which city is it closest to? |

Melbourne is a bit further south than Sydney so, although it is coastal, it will be colder. Sydney should be pleasant -- spring-like weather. I can't wait to hear your further plans.

Hmmm...I don't think it will quite be spring in Sydney, MC. I think it might be a bit brisk, if it's down in the low 50's or high 40's at night. (But maybe that's from my California perspective, as opposed to your Illinois one.)

I'm from Canada though so even if the temps drop to 10 degrees celcius, I doubt I'll complain

August did get sort of damp for us down south in Melbourne. A bit windy too sometimes, but not a winter at all like Canada. Still, Im sure the north would be nicer for weather. |

Which airline would you recommend for flights to Australia? I'm finding good prices on Air Canada and Qantas (anyone used them?).

From Canada I think those would be the two best options.
I flew United when I went, but that was from Chicago. Possibly Ger64 will have some advice. We'll poke her |

Do I know AC? I travel more on AC than many of their pilots
I have never flown to the Westward (or to the Far East) with them though - my one trip to Singapore was on Singpore Airlines, which was incredible, even in economy. Overall I would rate AC pretty high for long-haul flights to Europe, but I have only flown economy ONCE with them in the past decade, as I get upgraded because of my Super ELite status and upgrade coupons. They provide free wine and beer in economy, if a limited amount and will sometimes also offer mixed drinks. My sisters have taken AC to Canada several times (from Ireland and UK) and have been impressed when comparing AC with US carriers and Aer Lingus. My sisters rated their food higher than average standard. They are very impressive re on-time take-off for long-haul, that is unless you are trying to leave Montreal in January, but then you'd know that Vancouver airport, which I assume you will be flying from after the connection from Montreal, is new, very clean and quite well organized and more "human scale" when compared with Chicago, LA, etc. and I would chose a Canadian airport anyday over a US one - less stressful. In-flight service is always polite (well, they ARE Canadian) and attentive, particular from the West coast. This year, AC is upgrading their 737 jets and purchasing some new 777s. The upgraded jets will have individual screens in the seat backs, new seats, more space. If you give me some approximate dates and routings, I can try to find out if they will have the new jets in operation on that route. I have never flown Quantas, but I DO know they are the ONLY major airline that has never had a crash. I have always heard very good things about their service and aircraft. Overall, I would say you can't lose with either. |

Thanks for the tips. I would be going approximatively from August 19-20 to September 7-8.
Given the length of the flight, I definitely would have prefered to pick an airline which offers individual screens in economy class but it's not a must either. My prefered routing would be Ottawa-Vancouver-Sydney. I did find such a flight on AC but I'd have to spend an entire day in Vancouver before flying to Australia. |

You could do worse than spending a day in Vancouver - its a gorgeous city when the sun shines!

Very true. My mom has a cousin there so we could stop for a quick visit.
Is it recommended to fly (Qantas?) between cities in Australia? I'm thinking of doing Sydney, Gold Coast, Cairns, Darwin, Melbourne and back to Sydney to fly back home but that sounds like a lot of flying in 2-3 weeks. |

I'd also love to go to Beerwah to visit Steve Irwin's zoo but I'm not sure how that would fit in my itinerary.
Edit: I found out that if I stay in Brisbane, I could book a tour with viator.com to the zoo. They even pick you up from your hotel. |

oh and another question: would anybody know any tour companies based in Australia where I only have to buy my plane tickets and once there, I would join the tour and not to have to worry about planning everything?

I know there are inter-Australia flights and I would guess Qantas would run them, but you should check further. Actually, I'll ask my Ozzie BIL in the next few days, 'kay?
