I put this in R&R's but it really should be here too. When I was in Chemainus, I got the feeling I had been 'home' that day, due to the many
murals. Well, good reason. As it turns out, a mayor visited Chemainus in the 80's & brought the idea of the murals back to Dothan! There's a
nice article in a supplemental newspaper magazine today. I'm having problems getting my scanned pics to 'take' here. But, I found a website that
has the same story & a link that will show you most of Dothan's murals. I say most, because they just recently dedicated a music one that I don't
see listed on this website:

Those of you just in Victoria might be interested to know that the Castle seems to be getting rid of its volunteer program of docents guiding tourists through
the Castle. Seems a shame.

Why on earth would they do that? Are they just going to let everyone wander around not knowing anything about the place?

I don't really know. The new CEO is a weird person, and has decided to downsize the main volunteer coordinator and his assistant, so we figure the
volunteers will be the natural next step. Unbelievably, they've told the two people let go that they can stay through high season. Boy, I'd have my hat
on and be out the door leaving them high and dry as soon as possible. Why do them a favour at this point?
I guess they could do those impersonal headset things. I guess some people like them. |

Has anyone heard from Patrick yet? Wasn't he supposed to get back around July 3?

And yes, Meesthare did. I returned to HOT and HUMID Naples last night from LA. I am amazingly relaxed and rested. People keep asking me what I did during my
week in SF, or my week in Vancouver, or my week in LA to which my stock answer is "Not much". I've really enjoyed traveling alone (albeit very
bittersweet and sometimes lonely) and the idea that I don't have to worry about anything or anyone and can just do nothing if I want -- so often that's
just what I've done.
Gardenridge, I'm always amazed when something happens like that -- and it is not unusual. Some "big wig" deciding that people volunteering their time and giving of themselves is not nearly so important as paying people to do the same sort of thing. Sometimes I think it's a matter of a boss just not feeling he has enough "power" over someone he doesn't actually employ. Just amazing. |

Patrick, you've nailed it. I think that's exactly what it's about.
I'm feeling so sad about it because it's something I love to do. |

Patrick, are you there? Could we hear about your trip since it went on quite a bit longer?

uh-oh. I feel the pressure.
It hardly stands as a trip report. People say "what did you do for a whole week in Vancouver?" and I answer "not much". I must say traveling alone was indeed lonely at times, but the most relaxing trip I've ever done. It's different traveling alone. I'd make no plans and think "I don't have to do anything tomorrow if I don't want to", and as a result many days I just didn't. Endo and Mike can both attest to the fact that I simply fell asleep taking naps two nights in Tofino and missed our dinner plans. I'm afraid my reputation as "dependable" is now shot. I did see 8 fabulous plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland -- totally misnamed as only three of them were Shakespeare. The best season I've ever seen there. San Francisco and Los Angeles were equally relaxing. The highlight of SF was the SF Opera production of Porgy and Bess which was moving and spectacular. And I took the ferry to Larkspur one day where I was met by Chi Chi and taken to their fabulous house for a delightful lunch on the deck -- visited by a buck deer. |

I'm glad Ashland was a success. And MORE deer? Yikes.
Our deer came around today with twins in tow. |

Just getting back to this thread after a month.
Heh, endo, I didn't snap to the fact that you were doing rock dove as a pop quiz. I did think it odd that a birder would not know the alternate name for a pigeon, lol. Gardenridge - Canadian apology - "Nope, we are accused of saying sorry and not meaning it. Sorry. Oops. Okay, I think it's funny. I admit it. Sorry." Huh! While I was in Australia the past five weeks, I noticed Australians say "sorry" all the time, and I kept wondering what they were sorry for. Under the same circumstances, I would say, "excuse me," like if I inadvertently bumped into somebody. It finally hit me that they were not "sorry" in the sense that I would be sorry, like much more emotionally laden than "excuse me." Didn't realize Canadians also said "sorry." Lots of stuff like that in Australia, very little of it in Canada from what I have seen. And to think I was pondering the differences in Canadian English vs. Australian English just tonight in the shower BEFORE I read this thread ... I have a couple windows open and am replying to posts chronologically as I read them - Whoa! I didn't realize anybody was going to be in Bellingham. Looking at LaBama's pictures now. Yep, that is where I live, well, don't go to Lynden much, where the windmills are. Nice pictures. I don't recognize the church. Patash2 - "ferry to Larkspur one day where I was met by Chi Chi and taken to their fabulous house for a delightful lunch on the deck " - and now you know why we pet-sit/house-sit there just for fun (and to love up on some kitties, kitty now, hope to be kitties plural in the future). |

Hey, GR, did y'all get any rain over there tonight? We got just sprinkles here but I could see big rain to the west across the strait. And, there was
thunder, and we almost never get thunder here.

It was a downpour! This morning is very muggy, too. Weird!!! Nothing was reported in the news, in fact, I think they just talked about the high temperatures.
Our pups are absolutely crazy, so I wonder if there is something else about to happen. You know what they say about dogs and earthquakes. I hope not. |

Whew, we made it through the day with any earthquakes.
Very strange here this morning too. Foggy, muggy, and warmish. I would think that is the first time your pups have ever heard thunder. When we lived in San Francisco for five years, thunder there was so rare that the one time we heard it, we raced outside thinking something was blowing up. In the SF Bay Area, if you hear giant sky rumbles, it usually means an illegal fireworks or meth factory is blowing up. |

Well that's a good point. We rarely have thunder here.
Having two pups is overkill. I can't wait till my son gets home and takes his home. Tazo constantly supervises me, checks up on me, barks if I close a door, cries if I go in the car. I miss my freedom. |

That's the way DS2's dog is, GR - but worse, he barks fiercely any time anyone approaches the house. I know that's being a dog, but he doesn't
stop when I tell him to. I've had dogs that did. Of course, once the person is inside the house for a few seconds, he's OK & all pal-zie wal-zie.
He's lying here at my feet was I type this. Taking a break from throwing his toy repeatedly.
DS2 emailed me that this is his dog's BD. I guess I'll give him an extra treat today. |
