Ah Rome! My favorite city. It's like NYC, but old.

Two long days. Yesterday Villa Borghese, Piazza Navona, Pantheon.
Today Villa Adrian and Villa d'Este with a private guide arranged by mr mc's brother. Lunch at Sybilla Restaurant in Tivoli overlooking Villa Gregory or some such. Lunch was divine, pictures later! Our young euro-friends leave tomorrow and then we'll slow down a bit. |

No gelato stops, too much cholesterol:( Tasted some great gelato though at lunch in Tivoli.
Tivoli & Villa d'Este were superb. The latter as wonderful as I remembered it. Nothing like standing near a brace of fountains to cool you off! Our guide chose a wonderful restaurant in Tivoli called Sibilla. Ate outside, homemade pasta etc... Yesterday we took it slower. Lunch with our young friends before they headed to the airport, then off to Massimo Palace-National Museum where we saw some amazing wall paintings and statuary. Then to Sta Maria Maggiore and its mosiacs and gold coffered ceiling. Ate close to the hotel -- delicious pizza. Today is Roman Forum and maybe the Colleseum. Tomorrow is Vatican Museum, St Peters and collapse! Then back to the US on Wednesday. |

We're in the "collapse" state, although, short of the pope taking us around we did well. Purchased tickets online... went in the group entrance
as the entrance has been shifted due to construction work. We were there around 9:05am for a 10am reservation, but were in the museum by 9:20am! We did the
full monty, but walked quickly through 50% of the rooms. Focused on Pinoteca, Raphael rooms and Sistine Chapel. Other delights were the angel fresco fragments,
the Caravaggio Deposition and the Laocoon and Apollo Belvedere. We strode through the group tour door and into St Peters. After being suitably awed we headed
for Euroclero -- the place of choice for clerical clothes so mr mc could price a cassock. 360 euro was deemed a bit steep so he settled on a shirt instead.
Then we crawled back to the metro and then home to collapse and pack. Will do a proper report after our return tomorrow.

Something tells me that you have exercised muscles you didn't even know you had.
Have a good trip back. |
