NY Times article
This article whets my appetite. I've wanted to go there ever since I read the classic The Book of the Courtier by Castiglione.
Have you been to Urbino?--it's a bit off the beaten track.

We drove there on a day trip from Siena. Big mistake. It took hours each way and we were exhausted by the time we got home. The town was lovely though.

hours each way due to traffic, or distance?

You know, the actual distance is not that great, but it was not the autostrada. Somehow it took a lot longer than we had calculated. Lots of places where we
were traveling 30 instead of 60. I don't recall a big problem with traffic.
