Let me get this straight. I thought the old model i-phones (but still brand new) were on sale now for $99? Right? It's the new hot off the press model
that's about $300, or at least that was what I'd thought.

Even the 'old' 3G model is worth a lot because you're buying it without a contract with ATT. A lot of people buy used iPhones so that they
don't have to sign 3 year contracts. If you can get one for 50$, go for it!

mcbg1: So, are you saying that then I don't have to use AT&T at all - can choose the provider of my preference OR that I can negotiate a 1yr. contract
with AT&T instead of the usual ( I thought it was 2 yr. with a new phone?).

This is interesting. There has been no actual offer yet, so I don't even know if she'll be willing to sell it. It's the mom who thinks she would. Will see what she wants for it. Thanks for the info!

I agree with mcbg1. It is a steal. Before you do it, check with AT&T, what you would pay. AT&T is the only carrier. You would pay $99 for last
year's phone but you have to sign a two year contract. If you buy your friend's you may be able to negotiate a decent deal. Even if you don't use
it as a phone, it's a great iPod, he he.

just as an update: I already had iTunes on my PC. I went to the Apple website, and it told me to download the latest 8.0 version of iTunes in order to be able
to have other iPhone downloads.
I've tried the Itunes update about 10 times; it goes through the installation until almost near the end, and then I get an error message telling me the installation can't be completed because it can't delete the previous version.. I've also shut down and rebooted a few times. I've also just gone to iTunes to try to download stuff, and it doesn't seem to want to, I get pulled back into the loop of it wanting to download the latest iTunes software, which I can't do. I'm frustrated. So, I am still going to the Apple store today, for that class, but I expect it will be VERY busy there. I may have to call in my usual computer doctor for help. He's not an Apple guy, just general computer issues, but he's never failed me yet. Edit: Well,I still don't have the 3G update. My computer guy,who is excellent, uninstalled the iTunes that I had before, and started over from scratch. I now have the latest ITunes on my PC. However, the download of the 3G for my phone would not complete, not even with the Apple troubleshooter. So, we talked to a tech on the phone, who made an appointment for me for Tuesday at the Apple store to give me the download. My own tech says this has happened to a number of clients. So I don't have music or other apps on my phone yet, but at least I've started putting music on my computer, so that once I'm able to I'll load the music onto my phone. Although it cost me in time and money today, I feel less stupid about not being able to download the 3G because my expert couldn't do it either. The other thing I'm eager to try is to take a picture with my phone, and send it as an email attachment from my phone. Cheaper than a phone call, and more sophisticated (and faster) than a postcard saying "wish you were here." But, have to wait for the 3G.

I know it has been frustrating, hang in there. Keep asking questions, there will be a day that you'll see everything working properly.
I am not sure you want to send phone messages with your pictures. It can get very expensive. If you are in the US do it and enjoy. It might turn out to be very expensive when you are traveling outside the US. i was listening to CNN and they were talking about how much money they must be spending by sending photos and video from Iran. Look at it this way, if you get a category "iPhone" while playing Jeopardy, you can go for the "true daily double", you'll speed through it and rack all the money. he, he. |

I can't tell you how much I love my iPhone. While I was traveling I was able to take pics and send them to friends in real time; check my email at no cost
as long as I had wi fi available (and my hotel provided it in the rooms for free); I sent text messages on an international plan @50 cents each; and I was able
to take good quality pictures on days when it wasn't convenient to bring along my larger camera.
I've also finally figured out the music downloading and synching to my phone. All in all, I highly recommend it! |

I am so glad to hear that. I was worried that you did not have enough time to feel comfortable with it and it could have been a frustrating experience. Now
that you are home, I am pretty sure you'll get to find out how things work and what appeals to you. You made my day Elaine.

I'm glad you liked it too. As one of the folks here pushing iPhones, I would have been bummed if you were disappointed.
next thing you'll be discovering the app store, and finding there are other apps you like too, its only a matter of time |

I think picture postcards sent to friends and family at home will be a quaint throwback soon. I must admit there's a nice feeling to receiving a piece of
mail that someone took the trouble to send while they were traveling, but it usually arrives so long after the fact.
To be standing in a beautiful place in a foreign country, take a photo, and immediately, or later that day, send it home, was just such a great feeling, and it let people know that not only was I well, but having a great experience and sharing it with them. |

For anyone who's planning a trip, I highly recommended the TripIt App. I just downloaded it and it's amazing. You simply forward your confirmation
emails for your plane tickets, hotels, car rentals, etc, and in seconds they create an itinerary with all your information. It's really well designed. PS:
I am loving my new 3GS iPhone. I'll be uploading videos from my Australia trip to YouTube as soon as I take them. Stay tuned!

Thanks for the info mcbg1. It sounds good. I've decided to wait one more year for my update. Since I am not traveling much this year, I'll hold off for
more bells and whistles next year. I'll need it when I go to Spain.

OMG!!! Irma got an iPhone!!!
She doesn't do internet or email, at least not yet. But she was looking to upgrade her phone, so $99 seemed like a good deal. She has also wanted a GPS (what is she trying to tell me? I don't think I'm directionally challenged), so it seemed like a good idea. We will also now be able to check our email and check in here when we are traveling. Psssst! If you want to surprise her, her email address is irmadotparisi at yahoo dot com I'm not sure if she will answer, because she hasn't used a keyboard since high school. But it will be fun to watch her expression. |

I sent her an email just now. Congrats on the new iphone! I did get an itouch with my MacBook Pro laptop recently, so it has GPS. I'm getting closer
& closer to deciding to get one of those phones myself. Still procrastinating due to the monthly bill for what little I would use it. I keep thinking
that I could take a trip for what it would cost over the year! I still want one though...
