I will work on getting a report and pictures loaded in the next few days.
One day that I neglected to mention was the Saltspring Island tour. Probably because we were off the next morning headed for Tofino. I think Saltspring was June 1. Our 10:00AM ferry turned out to be the 10:40AM ferry, so things were a bit more rushed than we would have liked. But, once we landed, we took off for a cheese factory, where they raise the goats for their selection of cheeses. The group did some serious cheese tasting, and there were several purchases. From there, it was lunch at Auntie Pesto's (it seems like Saltspring Island is home of the bad pun, including a store named "Frankly Scarlet". Our waitress was mathematically challenged, it seems. Patrick was trying to pay for lunches at 3 different tables, but it looked like trying to figure that out gave her a headache and she just said "that is just too complicated.". From there it was off to a French Fabric Creations shop. I just stayed outside taking pictures while others browsed and shopped. Our last stop was at Anne and Rick's (friends of GR) beautiful home and B&B on the north end of Saltspring. We were all wowed by the views from the porch, and by the views inside. And to top it off, Anne had a spread of food and drink for us. What great hospitality --and we weren't even staying there. So sorry that we had to "eat and run", so to speak. But we just made it to the 4:00PM ferry back to Vancouver Island for our trip back to our respective lodgings. So that is the missing day accounted for. As I said, more datails and pictures to come. |

My trip continues. My apologies to Endo, who had left a message for me to join her at her lodge for dinner our last night in Tofino -- but I returned from an
all day whale watch and boat trip to Hot Springs Cove exhausted and took a little nap, waking up at nearly 7 to see my red light flashing and called to get my
message to join her at 6 to 6:30 -- duh -- I still needed a shower, so I called her and left a message -- no doubt she was already enjoying her dinner at her
beautiful lodge. On Friday I drove to Nanaimo for my ferry to Vancouver, stopping at the beautiful old growth Cathedral Grove for a brief hike, then having
halibut tacos on a boat in the harbor in Namaimo. I casually headed up to the ferry landing arriving right about 2 for a 3:00 ferry. The woman said they had
an unscheduled extra one which had come from Vancouver and was returning nearly empty with limited restaurant service -- did I want to go right now? Of course
I did, so I zipped onto that ferry, with one more car following me on, they raised up the gate and we were gone. Good thing as the traffic to get across the
bridge in Vancouver itself was nearly an hour -- so I still arrived at my rental apartment at almost the right time!
I'm enjoying a bit of cooler weather in Vancouver (I'm here for a full week)-- gee, I had to wear a long sleeve shirt last night! About that Hot Springs Cove near Tofino. It's 27 miles away from Tofino on an uninhabited island which is a Provincial Park. The boat lets you off, and you hike 2 kilometers through spectacular rain forest all on boardwalk and stairs. Then you arrive at the rocky other side of the island looking out to sea. There is a natural hot springs waterfall, so you start with a hot shower, then can sit in several pools, each one getting a little cooler as you descend to the Pacific. The last one has the tide rushing in, so it goes from warm to frigid with each wave and refilling from the springs. You take a picnic lunch and sun and eat on the rocks. Then hike back through the rainforest to catch your boat. It's kind of ethereal. And on the way there and back we saw whales -- oh my god did we see whales -- lots of playing orcas, a slew of humpbacks -- at one time 5 of them each on their own kind or encircling our boat, and one with a playful calf leaping into the air. Then on our return we spotted a gray whale as well -- seems that we saw the major three for the area, not to mention the sea lions, lots of eagles in and out of nests, and harbor seals and harbor porpoises galore. |

I think I missed a wonderful vacation. Everything you mention seems to be so exciting. I would have loved visiting that fabric store, the waterfall, the
whales, oh my!

Patrick, I'm thrilled for you to have seen that bevy of whales and wildlife. I look forward to Endo's report of birds.
As for the axe murderers, you'll note we were carrying tools, but were a bit challenged searching out an axe or two in DH's workshop. We thought we were creative, and you can see people were terrified of us. TRADEMARK TTG photo, I figure. |

No problem, Patrick....I kind of figured something like that happened....so glad you saw so many whales.....you did miss a good meal, though. The dining room at my hotel had really outstanding food. And that isn't something I would say lightly....Have an enjoyable rest of your trip.

According to my Victoria Bird book, it might have been a pelagic, double crested or a brandt cormorant.
re #11---poopy pigeon? No idea what a whimbrel is, but I'm going to look it up! Mute swan (cygnus olor) probably. Introduced to Victoria in 1889. We see them where we go in the wee trailer past Metchosin. There are two always nesting on the edge of the pond. |

Can someone do a chart identifying those in the photos? I have the pleasure of recognizing Patick, but I
think that's the only person there whom I know. |

Endo, common name for a rock dove is usually just pigeon.

Right, Jujuju. the rock dove is the pigeon....and by the way, the gull we were discussing prior to my trip is the Glaucous-winged, not the Glaucous...the
biggest thrill for me was getting really close sightings of the eagles. and the biggest surprise was the abundance of robins, just everywhere....I think of the
robin as a suburban yard bird, not a forest bird.

"And what did you do in Venice?"
"We fed the rock doves in St. Marks Square." Nope, sorry, it just doesn't sound right to me. |

Endo, I just went geocaching about twenty minutes away, and came across the bird sanctuary that I meant to take you to. I'd forgotten completely. You walk
in to a huge series of ponds, and on the corner there's a tower with a large telescope you can use to survey the area for birds. I saw a red-tipped
blackbird, a heron and a rufous hummingbird in the four minutes I allowed time for before hunting down the first cache.
Whew, do you think that the Victoria GTG created the most posts on a topic on the board in awhile? This is only one section! I hope no one is sick to death of us. If so, a Canadian apology goes your way. (I don't have to explain that, do I?) |

GR,
I had never heard of geocaching until I just spent time on line learning about it. Sounds like fun. I put in my zip code and there seem to be a lot of hidden treasures within a couple miles. How did you get involved in it? Do you do it as part of a group? I'm not surprised that this thread has so many posts since the Victoria GTG was so much fun and left all of us with such good feelings. |
