Re: Prune, the Bloody Mary (with beer chaser) was $9 and my chickpea stew was $14. Menu prices are listed on their website. http://www.prunerestaurant.com/ Certainly worth it IMO. That farro risotto was really nice, too. As was Joe's Pizza. Sigh.

Keep in mind that I'd had 36 years to create biases of NY before seeing it for myself. I already have a couple of quick NYC trips in the works for next year, and I'm eager to see how my impressions change as I spend more time there.

Of the many ways I would describe New York, the words "cold, impersonal, sterile urbanity" would never occur to me. Not even midtown. My father used to believe the suburbs started above 59th Street and below 34th Street.

Having your own personal tour guides - and foodies at that -

It was at Cafe Habana, at around 4:30 in the afternoon. We were tired and thirsty from hours of nonstop shopping (I know, poor us). We stopped in and asked if we could sit at the bar to order coffee.
