I know this neighborhood has a violent history, but what is it like now? According to wikipedia, "Most of the buildings have been razed and the entire neighborhood is being redeveloped into a combination of high-rise buildings and row houses, with the stated goal of creating a mixed-income neighborhood, with some units reserved for public housing tenants." What do the locals say?

I ask because I am planning a small family reunion in Chicago for a few days next summer,...

Palm Beach -- where to go?

We've been invited to a wedding in Palm Beach Gardens in May. We haven't decided yet if we will go. If we do have 4 or 5 days in this area, are there any compelling, or fun things to do? You guys know we have pretty broad interests when we travel, so any suggestions would be of interest. Are there any interesting natural sights, botanical gardens, swamps? How are the beaches there, is there snorkeling?

DH and I are going to Vegas Nov 6-9 for a quick getaway. We haven't been in over five years and I know there's always something new. Last time we really loved staying at the Paris hotel (great location, small and manageable, liked the restaurants), but now there's the Wynn and the M Resort. Any thoughts on the hotel scene? Sedona and Grand Canyon

I was sorely disappointed schedule conflict prevented me from attending the Victoria GTG. However, Mr. and Mrs. Gardenridge generously invited me to visit while I was in their neck of the woods in early August. They fed me very well and we had a nice visit. It was fun to meet them. They kindly permitted me to post this photo of them from that visit.

Salmon Glacier

It is a little ironic that my photo of Salmon Glacier has recently been posted at the top of this set of threads. I was just in Hyder and wanted to go up the mountain to see the glacier agaijn but the road collapsed into the river about 3 miles north of Fish Creek. When I left, they had no idea when or how they would reopen the road.

ViaRail strike

If anyone is planning a train trip through Canada in the near future, the ViaRail engineers went on strike this morning and all ViaRail's cross-country trips have been cancelled. I'm not sure if this effects local trains or ecursions like the Rocky Mountaineer but it would be worth checking if you are depending on it.
